What a Ziwei Doushu report actually is

Most people discover Chinese imperial astrology through a single question: does my chart match my actual life? Here is a falsifiable test. Pull up your Ziwei Doushu (紫微斗數) chart and check whether the star in your Life Palace (命宮) matches how you handle pressure. If your Life Palace holds Seven Killings (七殺), you likely cut ties cleanly and rarely revisit a closed door. If it holds Big Gate (巨門), you re-litigate conversations in your head for days. If neither description lands, the chart was probably cast from the wrong birth hour, or you are reading a generic Sun-sign style summary. A real Ziwei Doushu report should make you pause at least once because it named something you thought was private.

What a Ziwei Doushu report actually is

Ziwei Doushu is a palace-and-star system built from your lunar birth data. It places roughly 14 major stars and a set of auxiliary stars across 12 palaces, each governing a life domain: Life Palace (命宮), Career Palace (官祿宮), Wealth Palace (財帛宮), Spouse Palace (夫妻宮), and nine others. The interaction between a star, its palace, and the current Major Period (大限) determines how a domain expresses itself over time.

A competent report does three things. It identifies your Life Palace star and its modifiers. It maps your Career and Wealth palaces against your Life Palace to show where tension or support exists. And it explains your current Major Period, because a star's meaning changes when a Major Period recontextualises the palace it sits in. A report that skips Major Periods is not a Ziwei Doushu report. It is a personality sketch.

What a report should tell you that free summaries don't

Free summaries stop at star definitions. They tell you Greed Wolf (貪狼) means appetite, charm, or versatility. They do not tell you what a Greed Wolf in the Wealth Palace does when the current Major Period activates the Spouse Palace. That interaction is where real forecasting lives.

A paid report should answer three questions. First, which palace is your current Major Period overriding? Second, which stars inside that palace are being amplified or suppressed? Third, what does the Annual Pillar (流年) add on top for the current year?

Here is what a chart in this situation actually shows, and you can check yours against it. Find your Life Palace star. Now find your Career Palace star. If your Life Palace holds a quiet, internal star like the Moon (太陰) but your Career Palace holds Warrior (武曲), you have spent years being read as cold or transactional at work while privately feeling like you are performing a role. The report should name that split explicitly. If your current Major Period also crosses the Spouse Palace, the same pattern tends to surface in close relationships: you appear unbothered while internally negotiating a lot. Look at your own chart. If the Life Palace and Career Palace stars are from opposite temperaments, and the report does not flag the friction, the report is not reading your chart as a system. It is reading it as a list.

The Major Period override mechanic

Chart fact: a Major Period (大限) is a palace override, not a star swap

In Ziwei Doushu, a Major Period does not replace your Life Palace stars. It selects a different palace as the active lens for a decade. The stars inside that palace get temporarily amplified, and the Life Palace recedes into the background. This is why two people with the same Life Palace star can have radically different decades.

A common misunderstanding is that a Major Period "gives" you a new star. It does not. If your current Major Period falls on your Wealth Palace, and that palace holds Destroyer (破軍), the decade foregrounds destruction-and-rebuilding themes in money, assets, or income structure. The Destroyer was always there. The Major Period simply turns the light on it. A good report labels which palace is lit up for you right now, for how long, and which Life Palace patterns are temporarily muted as a result.

What most reports get wrong

Most reports fail in one of three ways. Some only describe stars in isolation and never show palace interaction. Some describe everything in the present tense and never attach a timeline, which makes the report unfalsifiable. And some flood the report with BaZi (八字) layers without explaining how the Day Master (日主) interacts with the Ziwei chart. Mixing systems is legitimate in 命理 (Chinese astrology as a life-navigation practice), but only when the report shows how each layer modifies the other. Otherwise it reads as two reports stapled together.

The fix is to ask for a sample before paying. A one-page sample should show your Life Palace, your current Major Period palace, and one specific claim about how the two interact. If the sample only lists star meanings, the full report will not get better.

How to read the report once you have it

Start with the Life Palace. Then read the Career Palace and Wealth Palace as a pair. Then read the current Major Period palace. Finally, read the Annual Pillar for the current year. That order prevents you from over-weighting a yearly forecast before you understand the decade it sits inside.

When a report says something like "Warrior (武曲) in the Career Palace brings discipline," test it. Does your work history show repeated themes of structure, austerity, or performance under constraint? If yes, the report is reading the chart. If no, check whether the report accounted for the palace's auxiliary stars. A Warrior sitting with the Wisdom Star (天機) behaves very differently from a Warrior sitting alone. A report that ignores auxiliary stars will produce clean but shallow readings.

What makes a report worth paying for

A report earns its price when it gives you a timeline you can verify. It should say which palace your current Major Period occupies, when that Major Period ends, and what shifts when the next one begins. It should also tell you which part of your chart stays constant regardless of period. That constant is your Life Palace structure.

Do not pay extra for bundled relationship or wealth reports unless the sample proves the author can differentiate how the same star set behaves in different palaces. A Greed Wolf in the Life Palace and a Greed Wolf in the Spouse Palace are not the same statement. If the sample cannot show that difference, the bundle is padding.

A final check: the report should be boring in the right places. Real Ziwei Doushu reading is structural, not theatrical. If every paragraph promises transformation, the author is selling narrative, not 命理.
